Biography

Presented by J and J Foundation

“A huge blues and boogie talent.” — Holger Petersen, Stony Plain Records

“He falls into the same class as the masters: Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, James P. Johnson, Fats Waller. Long live the Boogie Piano King!” Cascade Blues Association

“Vest’s bio reads like the history of rock ’n roll and blues … he’s among a select group that includes Ronnie Hawkins and Jerry Lee Lewis.” — John Valenteyn

Four times in the last six years, David Vest has won the Maple Blues Award for Piano Player of the Year in Canada.

Long regarded as one of the last of the great boogie-woogie piano players, his latest self-titled release on the Cordova Bay label highlights his growing reputation as a songwriter. (Downchild’s recent cover of Vest’s “Worried About The World” gave that legendary Canadian band its first number one song in its 48-year career.)

Born in Alabama, Vest called Portland home in the early 2000s and was co-leader of the Paul deLay Band, winning a number of Muddy Awards, including best keyboard player.

This year’s festival marks his first appearance in the U.S. since 2016. He has been touring constantly in Canada, appearing onstage with Colin Linden, Bill Kirchen, and the Soul Stirrers, among many others.
