John “Jubu” Smith, to put it bluntly, is the architect of modern R&B guitar. Beginning with his pioneering work in the 1990s with Tony! Toni! Toné!, Jubu’s limitless vocabulary of jazz distilled through the blues, soul, and gospel music, has set the standard for guitarists around the world. Jubu has toured and recorded with Whitney Houston, Raphael Saddiq, Brandy, Maze, Toni Braxton, Luther Vandross, and Mary J. Blige. Jubu previously appeared at WBF 2016 with his San Francisco Bay Area group, Legally Blynd.
Jubu will be joined by his brother and bassist, Eric (“Pik Funk”) Smith, who has played with such artists as Lalah Hathaway, Janet Jackson, Rihanna, and Justin Timberlake. Joining them on drums will be hometown friend from Oakland, and Portland native, Tyrone Hendrix.
