Bobby Torres Ensemble with Claudia Lennear

Day 01

Main Stage

2:00 PM

From New York City to Woodstock with Joe Cocker, through 10 years of touring with Tom Jones, to forming his own Latin jazz group in Portland, Bobby Torres has been on the music scene for over 40 years. The Oregon Music Hall of Famer has played for Desmond Tutu, recently performed with Tedeschi Trucks, and in 2016, was given the Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Hero Award.

In this special Waterfront performance, Torres teams up with longtime pal, Claudia Lennear, to revisit the high-powered soul-rock they performed with Joe Cocker and Mad Dogs and Englishmen and Leon Russell, and tap set lists from Torres‘ days with legendary Tulsa blues artists Jessie Ed Davis, Jim Keltner, JJ Cale, and Jimmy Karstein.

During the ’70s, Lennear was a genre-crossing musical pioneer who provided background vocals on stage and on recordings with Ike and Tina Turner, Allen Toussaint, the Rolling Stones, Joe Cocker, Leon Russell, George Harrison, Elton John, Steven Stills, Taj Mahal, and many others. Lennear, featured in the 2013 documentary 20 Feet From Stardom, is widely believed to have been the muse for songs written by Mick Jagger (“Brown Sugar”), David Bowie (“Lady Grinning Soul”), and Leon Russell (“Masquerade”).

Joining Torres and Lennear for this performance: Julana Torres, Lloyd Jones, Reinhard Melz, Dan Gaynor, and Tom Kay.
