When Son Little released his 2015 self-titled debut, his collaborations with The Roots and RJD2 had already made him a name. Critics worldwide recognized the unique power of Little’s music, which stripped the past for parts that could be reconstituted into something wholly original. NPR hailed Little’s “impeccably crafted songs” as “honest and unpretentious,” while The Independent proclaimed him “a formidable talent,” and Vice declared that he was “dissolving the barrier between R&B and rock ‘n’ roll one tearjerker at a time.” Little won a 2016 Grammy Award for his work producing Mavis Staples’ acclaimed ‘See That My Grave Is Kept Clean,’ and in 2017, Paste said his album New Magic “did for the blues what Sharon Jones did for soul music.” He is equally vintage and modern, blending soul, old-school R&B, and adventurous indie sensibilities into a sound fueled by gritty instrumental virtuosity and raw, raspy vocals with ambitious vision.
